  • Oklahoma Territorial Census, 1890 and 1907: This database contains the the 1890 and 1907 Oklahoma Territorial censuses. The 1890 census enumerates the following seven counties: Beaver, Canadian, Cleveland, Kingfisher, Logan, Oklahoma, and Payne. The only schedules that remain for the 1907 census are for Seminole County. The following information is available in this database: name, relationship to head of household, race, gender, and age.

In June 1890 a territorial census of Oklahoma was taken. It enumerated the following seven counties:

    • Beaver
    • Canadian
    • Cleveland
    • Kingfisher
    • Logan
    • Oklahoma
    • Payne

In 1907 a census of Indian and Oklahoma territories, comprising the proposed state of Oklahoma, was also taken. However, only the schedules for Seminole County exist. These schedules are also included in this database.

Information available in this database includes:

    • Enumeration place (town, county, state)
    • Name of individual
    • Relationship to the head of household
    • Race
    • Gender
    • Age
    • Place of birth*
    • Number of years in the U.S.*

    *Only in the 1890 census.

The 1890 U.S. Federal Census was damaged and destroyed by fire in 1921. None of the Oklahoma population schedules survived. In fact, less than 1% of all the schedules are available for research today. Because of this problem, the Oklahoma Territorial Census is a highly valuable source, as it provides a wealth of information that would otherwise be found in the Federal Census.

  • U.S. Indian Census Schedules, 1885-1940: This database contains an index to the Indian census rolls from 1885-1940. Information contained in this database includes:
    • Name (Indian and/or English)
    • Gender
    • Age
    • Birth date
    • Relationship to head of family
    • Marital status
    • Tribe name
    • Agency and reservation name

Other information about an individual, such as degree of Indian blood, as recorded in the later census years, may be available on the original record. Be sure to view the corresponding image in order to obtain all possible information about an individual.

The Indian Census schedules are census rolls usually submitted each year by agents or superintendents in charge of Indian reservations, as required by an act of 4 July 1884 (23 Stat. 98). The data on the rolls varies to some extent. For certain years – including 1935, 1936, 1938, and 1939 – only supplemental rolls of additions and deletions were compiled.

There is not a census for every reservation or group of Indians for every year. Only persons who maintained a formal affiliation with a tribe under federal supervision are listed on these census rolls.

Most of the rolls for the year 1940 were retained by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and are not included in this database. Rolls were not required to be submitted after 1940 so only a few post-1940 records are included here.

Oklahoma as Maps (See Also Map Information for other States) - Maps are particularly important in identifying the previous jurisdictions of the two territories that preceded present-day Oklahoma. The University of Oklahoma Library's Manuscripts Division and the Oklahoma State University Library at Stillwater, Oklahoma, maintain excellent collections for the state and its earlier territories. Guide to Cartographic Records in the National Archives indicates availability of GLO maps which are particularly helpful for Indian Territory.

Some valuable compilations have been published including these:

  • Boundaries of Oklahoma. Oklahoma City, Okla.: Oklahoma Historical Society, 1980.
